Artist Statement — Chlese Jiles
I have always been drawn to the art of storytelling. The older I get, the more I realize how much I still crave stories that represent me - a black woman - as well as other groups whose stories don't often get much play. I think all of our experiences are necessary to tell true stories - ones of adventure, fun, mundanity, and even pain. With so many different human experiences, I believe the characters and stories we digest in media (cartoons, books, movies, tv, etc.) should reflect this diversity. Through illustration and character design, my passion as an artist is to depict diverse characters and imagine stories that I feel remain untold.
