Diaspora (Ogoun's in Isolation - Third I), 2020. Mixed Media Collage. 33 in. x 23 1/4 in.

Artist Statement — Drek Davis

This piece is part of a series titled Diaspora (Ogoun's in Isolation). Stylistically the works continue the visual exploration of recurring imagery found in two of my former exhibitions: Idle Warship and Charmed. All of the works created for this exhibition are mixed media: half collage, half fabric assemblage. The pieces prominently feature silhouettes adorned by crowns and act as variations on the idea of royalty. Each work features birds, invoking the ideas of freedom/liberation. The other unifying element of these pieces is a celebration of the black body in the guise of the Yoruba god Ogoun.

Ogoun's in Isolation - Third I, is part of a meditation on majesty, self-actualization, and identity.
