Artist Statement — Evie Hinojosa

My work can be described as a conglomerate of distinct female experiences, and as a female visual artist, I draw from both my personal as well as the collective female experience. I focus on themes within female experience in order to share with others the struggles of women and also to bring awareness to significant women’s issues such as menstruation, sexuality, sexualization, and sexual violence.

In exploring themes within female experience, my process largely includes transforming my own body into an instrument to paint with, which allows me to be author and subject rather than just, historically speaking, the object of sexualization. The representations of body prints in my work are used as symbols of self-ownership, and the fragmented nature of the prints themselves reference to the way that women are viewed as a collection of pieces rather than as a complete whole in our society. Every piece I make is a peek inside this darker sub-world in which women are subjugated to live.
