Luba Zygarewicz
Alveare Luminoso (Glowing Hive)
In a world disrupted by uncertainty, our need for human connection and community became evident as life required us to live in a state of fluidity. Inspired by natural beehives, and their complex lives of interdependence and mutual respect for the greater good, I envisioned a “Glowing Hive” as a beacon of hope and light. Like the bees, I believe that each of us has a gift, a unique part to play, and the power to make a difference for a better tomorrow.
ALVERE LUMINOSO is a suspended SUPER-HIVE like structure that activates its surroundings through light and movement. It is crafted from plexiglass, the material now commonly used as a barrier and shield; however, I wanted to use it as an agent for connection instead of separation. The multiple acrylic hexagons that form the layers are individually woven together to enhance movement and represent our need for connection with one another, while the fluttering reflections speak of the greater impact we each have on our environment and community.
Together we can pollinate the world with beauty and wonder!

BIOGRAPHY
Luba Zygarewicz is an artist, educator, and mother of four based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born in Chile, she grew up in Bolivia and moved to San Francisco at age 15. She received a B.A. in Sculpture from Loyola University and her M.F.A. from San Francisco Art Institute.
Zygarewicz creates material-and-process driven, responsive works that archive the everyday to highlight and value ordinary human experience. Oftentimes embodying fragility, strength, and the transient nature of time, her pieces are engaged with multifaceted dichotomies: lightness contrasted with heft; frailty countered by resilience; discards and decay restored or preserved. Zygarewicz reimages spaces and materials to create sculptural and immersive environments that spark wonder and encourage viewers to slow down and notice the quotidian in novel ways.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally including ‘OPEN Space', Venice, Italy; Ogden Museum of Southern Art; City of Santa Rosa Public Art Program, CA; Mexican Cultural Institute of New Orleans; Contemporary Arts Center, and Living Arts Center, Tulsa,OK. She has created public and community-based artworks in conjunction with LUNAFete; EPHEMERA at Laffite Greenway; ‘Projeto Andorinha-the HOPE project in the ruins of Sãn Sebastião, Messejana, Portugal; ‘Walking on Air’ performance, Maiori, Italy; and March Against Poverty, Lake Providence, LA.
She is a recent recipient of grant from Walter Anderson Museum of Art and has been awarded residencies at The Hambidge Center and StudioWorks at Tides Institute and Museum of Art (2021).
